A Century Comes to a Close

(1866-1899)

After the Civil War, the families continued to grow in the many areas of the U.S. Besides the popularity of farming, many Philbricks & Philbrooks would go on to become very successful in occupations such as Dentistry, Optometry and Law. Also popular during the 19th Century was that many Philbricks and Philbrooks were Freemasons. The strong religious and work ethics of our 1800's ancestors were probably a reason for the large numbers found within this fraternity.

In 1886, Rev. Jacob Chapman of Exeter, N.H. compiled and printed the largest gathering of Philbrick & Philbrook history and genealogy in his book, "A Genealogy of the Philbrick & Philbrook Families." It is from Chapman's effort that we are able to trace many of ourselves back to Thomas the Emigrant. Though his book does contain several errors, it stands as the major framework for all of the early Family tree.
